For over seven years now, Croft
Timber has enjoyed increased export demand for the higher density
of Northland Radiata Pine Poles for the utility markets in Asia
and on occasion, further afield.
UTILITY POLES
Croftpoles are CCA (Copper Chromium
Arsenate) treated to the level of Hazard Class 5 (H5) for critical
end use situations. Results have shown that poles treated appropriately
will have expected average service lives in excess of fifty years.
Durability monitoring to date has shown that best results have been
achieved with pine poles treated with either CCA or Pentachlorophenol
(PCP) oil, however there are economic and environmental disadvantages
associated with PCP.
It is for this reason that CCA
is the only treatment of utility poles undertaken in New Zealand
today and is unlikely to change in the forseeable future.
